PERSONAL PROFILE Spouse: Patti Kids: Greg, Katie, Stephen Hometown: St. Louis, MO Birthdate: August 14, 1956 Hobbies: Flying Rusty Wallace had the statistics of a champion in 2000, but in the end the driver of Roger Penske's No. 2 Ford Taurus was only frustrated over his lack of championship success. Still, his seventh place finish in the Winston Cup points marked the 14th time in 16 full seasons in which he has finished in the top-10. Wallace, of St. Louis, cracked the elusive 50-win barrier at Bristol in the spring, winning the Food City 500 on March 26 and stretching his consecutive-win seasons to 15, best of all active drivers. Wallace went on to add victories at Pocono, Michigan and Bristol, again. His statistical rundown included his best season ever in winning nine pole positions. He won four times, scored 12 top-5 and 20 top-10 finishes and his sweep of Bristol pulled him into a tie with Cale Yarborough and Dale Earnhardt for second place in total wins at Bristol with nine. Wallace dominated the lap leader standings, pacing the field 61 times in 21 of 34 races. Wallace and crew chief Robin Pemberton are bound and determined to improve his consistency in 2001 and therefore put him in position to bookend the championship he won in 1989. Wallace made his racing debut in 1973 at Lakehill Speedway near Valley Park, Mo. He recorded more than 200 feature-race wins from 1974-1978 before joining the United States Auto Club stock car circuit in 1979, where he was rookie of the year. He won the 1983 ASA ACDelco Challenge Series champion and the 1991 IROC title. |
